report:
Three canoeing expeditions were to be had on our trek east. We paddled in 2 canoes... good thing half of those on the participant list weigh under 60 pounds.

The second outing was a paddle to Perce rock. This is a very large rock (on earlier maps, called an island) that juts up some 150 feet (that's my best guess, anyway) from the Atlantic. Through one end there is a largish hole, which in theory is accessible by foot at low tide but which proved less so when we tried one evening (only Dave, with Cara on his back, and Keith made it. And they got Very Wet doing so).

So the next morning we paddled out to it, just amazing. We timed it pretty well, the wind was only just starting to get strong and we were able to wind ferry across the only exposed piece of water to the lee of the Rock.

There were huge numbers of sea birds, all rather confused as we were on the normally human-free side of the Rock. Every nook and cranny seemed to house some sort of gull or other.

The surf was pretty gentle, as evidenced by the two babies who fell asleep on the return trip. We were out for perhaps an hour in total.
