whitewater play intermediate paddlers 1 day
Elora Gorge
Sunday, March 14, 2004
route:
length: 4.0km, 1 day
difficulty: intermediate

organizer: Chris Mack
participants: Allan Kostyniuk, Chris Mack, Keith Nunn, Tim Ulrick, Dave, Scott?

report:
level was ~22cms today. The chute was still pretty bouncy, no scout or portage possible.

Pics now available at http://vvcc.canoeontario.ca/gallery/elora_mar2004

A nice group of c-boaters, mostly open boats. Allan was trying out his new c1 and we had one yakker along who found us in the parking lot (lucky for Alan as he made the boat nab after the chute.)

Alan and I were the swims of the day on the chute. Tim managed a nice roll in the same situation. More boat chasing, but the weather was a bit warmer (2c + wind = -5c) so we didn't get coated in ice -- nice. The GRCA says the water temp was 0.7c and I believe them.

What can I say about the chute? A good line is relevant but nothing matters more than keeping angle and momentum. I've ranked this run up to intermediate at this level because the chute is hard work and is completely non-optional. We're going to track the levels and see where the chute becomes optional.

Erik met us at the take-out and, while disappointed at missing the run, was relieved not to have to chase loose open boats. :-D
