Moira and Upper
Salmon - first mosquitos
Saturday, April 21, 2001 to Sunday, April 22, 2001
length: 2 days
participants: Caroline Owen, Chris Mack, Nicole Mack,
Although it wasn't an official VVCC event, a few of us (Chris, Nicole, Cline) joined up with a bunch of others to run the Moira and Upper Salmon rivers this weekend. The rain that happened on Saturday during the day down here in the city kindly waited until the middle of Saturday night out in Brockville (where we spent the night at a friend's having a big pj party with lots of paddling videos, a bbq and one or two beers!)
The highlights of the trip include my first mosquito bites of the season. Yes, spring is definitely here! Also, I'd like to report that Nicole did her first "gunwale grab" in her kayak. Yup, that's right... There were about 4 or 5 of us surfing the same wave at the same time (often a recipe for disaster!) and Nicole got squeezed out as Mike shredded towards her on her left side, and I got a bit close on her right. As she slipped off the back of the wave and started to tip over,
she grabbed the gunwale of Mike's boat and neatly flipped him. The gunwale grab didn't prevent her from tipping either (funny, that's usually the case when gunwales are grabbed!). We had a good laugh about the kayaker doing a "gunwale grab." They both rolled up and everything was fine.
The Upper Salmon was a fantastic run. It's a beautiful remote section of river that has everything from class 1 to class 4. Everything is runnable, depending on skill level, and there are easy portages around
the more difficult stuff. The Moira is mostly class 1, and has quite a few surf spots. It's a great spring warm-up run. This has been an awesome spring for whitewater. I hope you've managed to get out in it. If not, cancel your plans and hit the water!!
