report:
We set out at noon on Easter Monday for Liam's first paddle and Cara's second. Water was very low, which seemed crazy after the high water on the Black on Saturday.

Liam and Cara were not impressed by having to wear PFDs and let us know. There were many folk fishing and making a mess of trash, broken branches and empty beer bottles on the banks. This led me to wonder if the improvements the Credit River Anglers Association made to the Credit were to remove the garbage their fellows left.

We stopped for a pleasant lunch at a riffle about 2/3 of the way down. We enjoyed the sun and each other for a bit before heading back to the boats.

The chute (an old lock) we ran easily last year was blocked with debris and we decided to call it quits there, about 2 km before our original destination.

The Holland was being turned into a canal system to extend the Trent Severn Waterway until they realized, as they were about to finish, that there would never be enough water to operate it (http://www.town.newmarket.on.ca/history.cfm). This problem continues and most times you can't get a canoe down.

All in all it was a good paddle and chance to get Liam out for the first time. However, it was made enjoyable by the company and the weather. I recommend forgetting about the Holland River for any kind of paddling.
