16 Mile Creek - "The sky is falling"
Sunday, March 18, 2007
route: From Neyagawa north of 407 down to Dundas (hwy #5) in Oakville
length: 1.39km, 1 day
offsite report: http://kapn
A fun run, but water was at the low limit of runnability. It appears to be headed up now.
There were a lot of people running today, but Glen and I waited for Carlo and so we three wound up on our own.
At the first decent wave, we were hanging around playing. I zoomed across the wave into the overhung eddy on river left and set up to try to catch the wave on the return. Just as I was entering the wave a big piece of rock fell from the ledge above. It struck the side of my helmet, bashed my elbow, smashed my gunwhale and punctured my airbag. Needless to say, I was surprised and a bit hurt.
I got my ass out out of that eddy, happy to be upright and not seriously injured. After a few minutes recuperating, we had a decent run even though I was in a bit of pain. Carlo, Glen and I had one dump each. Too little water to roll (and no front air bag in my case). My dump was because of a downstream paddle jam, Glen's was on a tight, fast corner with a sweeper, and I didn't see Carlo's so I can't comment.
It's great to be back on the water! Stay clear of overhung areas though.
