route: below the tooth to the low bridge (at ~75cms)
length: 1 day
offsite report: http://kapn
This was my first run of the new year, but Chris and Erik had been down on Jan. 2 as well.
There is some uncertainty about whether it was higher on the first or second, but based on today's data (72 m3/s + Salem @ 11 m3/s) it seems that it was likely higher and rising. Regardless, it was the highest I've ever run it. The warm-up was pleasant and the run was good for the most part.
Unfortunately, the chute halfway down utterly spanked me. This had a couple of unfortunate outcomes:
- the other group members had to spend too much energy and good river section chasing my boat
- I was pretty pooped after two lengthy swims. (The second swim was longer and was voluntary to get downriver to where my boat was.)
That river is cold in January! At any rate a good run, pushing my limits, and good friends to do it with.
We gathered at the local Tim's afterward where Chris modelled his new VVCC shirt.
Chris sent me this tidbit with his take on the water level...
It seems that it jumped significantly at around noon, Salem was pouring in an additional 20cms to the gorge too. These charts are confusing, there is quite a difference in levels at West Monterose, which is just downstream of the takeout and below shand dam. The math does not add up either, if you add 'below shand dam' and 'Salem' you still dont get the flow for west montrose.
I was confused at the putin level, I remember looking at the rock in the water and saying the level is lower than yesterday, but that was because we were still upstream of the Irvine Creek!
I think it could have been easily 60cms.
